  • Gov. Spencer Cox said Utah may hold students back if they do not meet grade-level reading benchmarks, following Mississippi’s example. Lawmakers will discuss details before the 2026 legislative session to boost early literacy and support teachers.  KUER

  • After coach Jarrod Hoagland resigned, Layton Christian hired interim coach Mark Burton on Monday, and the Eagles won a 51-50 double-overtime game against Ogden on Tuesday, Jan. 6, snapping a four-game losing streak and setting up a rematch on Jan. 22.  Standard-Examiner
  • Fremont High girls overcame an early deficit for a 68-60 home win over Maple Mountain on Tuesday, moving their record to 10-2, while Morgan boys beat Park City on Monday with Bracken Saunders scoring 31 points.  Standard-Examiner
  • Clearfield will honor BYU basketball great Haley Hall Steed on Jan. 16 by retiring her No. 33 jersey during halftime against Box Elder + she becomes only the second Falcon to receive this honor.  Standard-Examiner
  • Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker surprised the Alvernaz family on Christmas when father Matthew arranged tickets for a playoff game, deepening the local fans’ loyalty after their move from San Diego.
