ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Five years after a 5.7 quake struck near Magna and was felt by 30,000 people with over 2,500 aftershocks, state officials have urged residents to build emergency kits and secure heavy furniture — steps meant to boost safety as the Great Utah ShakeOut drill is set for April 17 — to help prepare for the next big quake. - ➤ Ogden residents will have the chance to join a water conservation effort when the RainHarvest rain barrel program starts in May, offering subsidized barrels for $57 (regularly $155) as part of a project led by 16 Wasatch Front communities. The program will teach residents how a small change can lead to more water-saving actions in their daily lives. Standard-Examiner

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Utah spent $60M in taxpayer funds to buy gold for its rainy day funds and now holds over half a ton in a Brink’s vault on Salt Lake City's west side. Lawmakers and state officials plan to set up a system—under HB306—that would let state vendors receive payments in gold while the treasurer can purchase up to an extra $90M when needed. The Salt Lake Tribune
- ➤ Today the Federal Railroad Administration approved a waiver to restore the quiet zone between Ogden and Salt Lake that will stop train horns immediately and require railroads to comply within seven days. Local leaders must begin improvements as soon as practicable with two years to upgrade the 1000 West crossing and one year for North Salt Lake’s main street crossing. FOX 13 News
- ➤ At Tuesday’s meeting, the Weber County Commission approved a multijurisdiction IT mutual aid agreement that lets government IT leaders request free technical help for up to 40 hours during emergencies—this agreement lasts five years and encourages joint training and resource sharing. The commission also approved a memorandum with Weber Human Services for a jail-based Medication Assisted Treatment program and amended solid waste fees in the Ogden Valley. Standard-Examiner
- ➤ A new survey finds most Utah residents think it will take at least six months to return to normal after a major quake and worry more about economic issues than natural disasters.
