Good morning, Ogden. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 29th of March.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On March 28, Gov. Cox signed 100 bills into law, one of which was HB 127 — Ashley’s Law — that raises prison sentences for those who sexually harm people who are unable to protect themselves from abuse from five years to life to ten years to life in prison. The law is named for Ashley Vigil, whose case spurred the push for tougher penalties.  KSL-TV
  • Gov. Spencer Cox signed HB81 — a law that bans the addition of fluoride to public drinking water — on March 28th as lawmakers argued that adding fluoride was too expensive. Dentists and national health groups — many from Ogden — have warned that the move risks hurting low-income residents who rely on public water for dental care.  KUER
  • After ground was broken over a year ago, the downtown WonderBlock project is taking shape—its main parking structure will open later this year and Phase 1 West construction continues this summer. The $188 million public-private partnership will create office space, retail space including a grocery store, housing, and a boutique hotel, with the entire project set to complete in 2027.  Standard-Examiner
