COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ogden residents expressed frustration on Saturday when the city fenced off part of Gib’s Loop at Mount Ogden Golf Course over safety concerns from stray golf balls, and over 1,000 signatures were collected on a petition urging officials to reconsider the change. Volunteers helped trail users from May 1 through today, and locals asked city leaders to explore alternative solutions — noting the trail is a key part of their outdoor lifestyle.  KSL-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A University of Utah report found that in 2024 residents paid 11.33 cents per kilowatt-hour—about one third lower than the national average—while electricity use hit a record high even as coal’s share dropped to 46% with only five active mines. Coal power has fallen nearly 60% since 2008 and solar plus natural gas production have increased to meet growing demand.  The Salt Lake Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A New York-based company named Odyssey was chosen Friday to manage Utah’s $100 million voucher program, Utah Fits All, after the state ended its previous contract. The company— which had management issues in Idaho— will start a two-year contract on May 16 as the state works to appeal a ruling that declared the program unconstitutional.  The Salt Lake Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 1, the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food opened applications for $1,000,000 in grants to help local food and agriculture businesses process more Utah-grown products—this effort is meant to strengthen the local food supply. Q&A sessions are scheduled on May 7 from 6-8 p.m. and June 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and applications will close on June 8.  Standard-Examiner
  • The SUN Bucks program will give families on SNAP, TANF or Medicaid an extra $120 per eligible school-age child for groceries this summer when school ends, aiming to help ease food insecurity. Children in free or reduced-price lunch programs will be automatically enrolled+ families can use the benefits at SNAP-approved stores and farmers markets.  Standard-Examiner
