COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 24th annual America First Ogden Marathon will take place on May 17 with over 6,500 runners expected, and the Fleet Feet Fun & Fitness Expo will run on May 16 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center—GOAL Foundation still needs around 300 volunteers to fill roles at the start, finish, and Kids K fun run.  Standard-Examiner

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 17-year-old boy died in the hospital after a near-drowning rescue in the Weber River on Saturday when a group of boys shooting airsoft guns jumped into the water and only one resurfaced, prompting a 90-minute search and an airlift to Primary Children’s Hospital.  Standard-Examiner
  • Search and rescue crews have been busy this season—rescuing a hiker from Elephant Rock on Sunday and saving lost hikers from Lone Peak before a storm hit—while a tragic accident occurred Saturday when a teenager playing near the Weber River jumped in with friends, did not resurface, and later died at the hospital.  FOX 13 News

  • Walmart will remodel 650 stores nationwide, including three in Utah + Springville, Syracuse, and West Valley City, as part of its Stores of the Future project. The updates include new signage, more item selections and expanded online shopping features while stores remain open during renovations with no exact timeline provided.  Standard-Examiner

  • Ogden City Police issued a Silver Alert for 71-year-old Donnie Ray Baggett, who has dementia and was last seen near the corner of 31st and Ogden Avenue wearing a plaid shirt + blue jeans and using a walker, and anyone with information is asked to call dispatch at 801-395-8221.  Gephardt Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Weber State University professor, Randy Hurd, helped design two urinal models called the Cornucopia and Nautilus that reduce splashback to 1.4% of what normal urinals produce, as noted in a press release last Tuesday—patents are pending and no manufacturing plans have been made yet. Hurd worked with a student and a University of Waterloo team, and the university will handle any further development.  Standard-Examiner

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers are working to restore the Great Salt Lake by investing in water conservation and new water policies, but critics say the slow plan may not stop harmful dust from exposed lake beds and damage to public health and the economy—more drastic water cuts from all users may be needed to reach a healthy lake level.  KSL-TV
