  • Vandals broke into the Roosevelt Elementary School construction site in Washington Terrace early Thursday morning and caused thousands in damage plus the Weber School District is offering a $500 reward for tips to help arrest the suspects.  Gephardt Daily
  • Ed Smart recalled the terror of his daughter Elizabeth’s kidnapping from her Salt Lake City home on June 5 — he remembered Lois’s urgent call to the police and the nine months of fear that followed, and he now works with Youth Futures Utah in Ogden to help vulnerable youth.  FOX 13 News

  • Ogden City Arts announced that nominations for the Mayor's Awards in the Arts are now open and will be accepted until 4 p.m. July 25, and Ogden Mayor Ben Nadolski will host the ceremony later this year at Browning Theatre at Union Station - a chance for local artists and creatives to be recognized.  Standard-Examiner

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers say the hot, dry summer could expose more than 800 square miles of Great Salt Lake bed—this may trigger dust events that carry heavy metals and bacteria to nearby communities. Experts warn that if winds or dry thunderstorms occur, air quality will drop and state action may follow if health issues emerge.  KUER

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers discussed a plan to have school kids and prisoners chew xylitol gum three times a day to help prevent cavities, following Utah's ban on fluoride in drinking water—Xlear offered to supply the gum at cost and the pilot, which would run at about $30 a year per person, has not been acted on yet.  The Salt Lake Tribune

  • The Weber-Morgan Health Department announced this week that a bat from Morgan county tested positive for rabies and issued recommendations to keep pets’ vaccinations current, avoid contact with wild animals, and wash wounds immediately—reminding residents to take necessary precautions as warmer weather increases wildlife activity.  Standard-Examiner
