Good morning, Ogden.

The Weber County Sheriff's Department said police K-9 Nova — who joined last November and was training in narcotics detection with Deputy Nielsen — died unexpectedly Saturday from an unreported medical condition.

A state judge ruled late Friday that 67-year-old Ralph Leroy Menzies, convicted in 1988 for killing Maurine Hunsaker, is competent to be executed despite his dementia—his attorneys plan to appeal while the Attorney General’s Office will file a death warrant soon.

The Weber County Sheriff’s Office said police dog Nova died Saturday, June 7 due to an unexpected medical condition—she was nearly 2 years old, joined the service in November 2024, and was in active narcotics training with Deputy Nielsen.
