Good morning, Ogden. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 12th of June.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utah joined 26 other states and the District of Columbia in filing a lawsuit against 23andMe after bankruptcy hearings raised worries that the company might sell personal genetic data without asking first. The suit warned that selling DNA data—the one marker for every person—could affect customers, their families, and even future people.  KSL-TV
  • Sen. Mike Lee revived a plan to sell federally managed land in 11 Western states in a draft bill released Wednesday evening — the proposal would let Interior and Agriculture Secretaries list properties for sale within 60 days to boost housing while keeping national parks, monuments and lands with mining or grazing rights off the market. Opponents warned the plan could favor tax cuts for the rich over protecting cherished public land.  The Salt Lake Tribune
  • The Department of Justice released an opinion showing that the president can revoke national monument designations—this decision may affect Utah sites like Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. Local leaders, including Sen. Mike Lee, argue that these lands should be managed by Congress and hope the Department of the Interior listens to local needs.  The Salt Lake Tribune
  • The Weber County Sheriff’s Office announced the passing of K-9 Nova—an almost two-year-old German shepherd who joined the unit in November 2024—after she died on June 7 from an unexpected medical condition. The department is planning a memorial service in the coming days as the team continues to mourn her loss.  Standard-Examiner
