ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Last night, downed power lines and strong wind sparked grass fires in Morgan County that grew to about an acre—county crews on second alarm contained them near a sewer plant and substation—while in Ogden, firefighters quickly controlled a wildfire that set cars on fire at a junkyard and on the roof of the Fresenius building. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ New home construction and hotter summers are causing more pest problems across Utah—pest control companies report more bed bug and cockroach calls and increased travel spreads these insects. Experts say warmer weather speeds up insect life cycles and new pests, like the sycamore scale, have reached Ogden—raising concerns for crops and natural areas. The Salt Lake Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Lt. Governor’s office certified the referendum on House Bill 267 that could repeal a law limiting public employee bargaining after more than 320,000 signatures were gathered. Opponents have 45 days to remove signatures, and if enough remain the referendum will appear on ballots in 2026—unless Governor Spencer Cox calls a special election. FOX 13 News
- ➤ On Saturday, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources approved a change to the Senate tax bill that makes 18.7 million acres of Utah public lands eligible for sale. The measure, led by Sen. Mike Lee, would allow isolated parcels to be used for housing and infrastructure if passed — though over 100 outdoor groups oppose the plan, saying it could permanently reduce public access. KSL-TV
- ➤ State housing leaders including Gov. Spencer Cox’s senior adviser said Utah is among aggressive state players addressing a national housing shortage by using innovative grant incentives—transforming local resistance to denser development into faster project approvals while warning that federal support remains critical. The Salt Lake Tribune
- ➤ Rocky Mountain Power is shutting off power overnight in parts of Ogden to lessen wildfire risk amid high winds and 100-degree heat — the move aims to prevent sparks from equipment igniting fires. Fire officials said Sandy crews finished a 14-day deployment and then take a three-day cooldown to avoid fatigue — local agencies will help support crews if extra assistance is needed. FOX 13 News
