CULTURE NEWS

  • America Cuevas, a Weber State student, hosted a Hispanic Heritage Month workshop where community members decorated Catrinas with paint and paper—these figures will be shown at the Dia de Los Muertos event in November to celebrate cultural traditions.  FOX 13 News
  • Ogden CAN and Weber State University’s Matthew S. Browning Design Lab are hosting Poetry in the Park Fest at Lester Park on Oct. 11 from noon to 3 p.m. The all-ages event features poetry readings, workshops and an open-mic for sharing work+ a book exchange, low sensory reading lounge and creative stations that bring art and community together.  Standard-Examiner

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Environmental groups and local organizations held a rally near the Great Salt Lake on Oct 1 to announce a federal lawsuit against Interior and the Fish and Wildlife Service to protect Wilson’s phalarope and save the lake’s fragile habitat—warned that rising salinity and water shortages continue to harm wildlife and local life.  The Salt Lake Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Despite the federal shutdown, Utah national parks remain open with reduced services and staffing — officials said they are working with partners to support tourism and local businesses.  Gephardt Daily
  • Essential federal workers are facing a government shutdown that means some must work without pay—union official Troy Tingey said employees at Hill Air Force Base and others may not receive their pay while IRS staff in Ogden get five extra business days of funding. This uncertainty has left many frustrated as agencies scramble to secure additional funds to maintain services.  FOX 13 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Weber State quarterback Jackson Gilkey had surgery Tuesday on his fractured left fibula from a game at UC Davis—he will miss the rest of the season. Coach Mickey Mental said the team will start junior Dijon Jennings during the bye week before hosting Sacramento State on Oct. 11.  Standard-Examiner
  • The Utah Jazz announced that Marque Denmon will serve as the new public address announcer, replacing Dan Roberts who retired after 46 seasons—Denmon will meet fans at a Midvale event before the preseason opener on Oct. 8 in Houston.  Standard-Examiner
