Good morning, Ogden. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 8th of October.

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the October general conference in Salt Lake City, President Dallin H. Oaks said families and temple ordinances remain essential, but he did not announce any new temple construction—he explained that many temples are already in planning and the decision was approved by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The Church will delay new announcements until more temples are completed.  Gephardt Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • PEN America said that restrictions on school books are now so common that local bans can lead to statewide limits—if a book is banned in three Utah school districts, it is removed from all 41 districts. The report counted over 3,750 unique titles banned this school year and warned that such rules reduce parents’ choice.  The Salt Lake Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ogden City Council member Marcia White said the council now works better with Mayor Nadolski—using a new approach to review plans such as keeping Business Depot Ogden revenue for assets rather than salaries and boosting downtown development. She added that this teamwork will help lower property taxes and lessen the need for long commutes as more businesses come to town.  Standard-Examiner

SPORTS NEWS

  • Weber girls soccer beat Syracuse in a 5—4 penalty kick shootout after a 1—1 tie in regulation and extra time on Oct. 7 in Pleasant View. Senior captain Kallie Wallace made key saves while junior Carly Gardenhour scored the game-winning kick as the team prepares for a region playoff bye.  Standard-Examiner
